THE DOCTRINE OF ETERNAL PUNISHMENT

There are those that believe there is no place called hell as a permanent place of judgment. Nevertheless, if the Scriptures are examined the following would be discovered. Sin came into existence before Adam and Eve. Sin started with the PRIDE of an archangel named Lucifer, whose name was later changed to Satan. Because of this fact, God established a place for Satan and the angels that followed him. Consider the following Scriptures:

2 Peter 2:4-11 : “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly thereafter; and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day with their lawless deeds), then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble when they revile angelic majesties, whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord.” (NASB)

Jude 6 : “And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.” (NASB)

God extended the punishment of hell to man at the time of the original sin of Adam and Eve. To illustrate this, read the following Scriptures:

Matthew 10:27 : “And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (NASB)

Matthew 25:40 : “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.” (NASB)

Matthew 13:48 : “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels shall come forth, and take out the wicked from among the righteous, and will cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (NASB)

The Scripture teaches that hell is only a temporary place for the wicked. The Scriptures teach that all those in hell at the time of the final judgment day will stand before God for final judgment and all will be placed in what the Scriptures refer to as the “Lake of Fire.” Consider the following Scriptures:

Revelation 20:10-15 : “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” (NASB)
